Aboriginal Affairs Victoria (AAV) is part of the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development. AAV's responsibilities include the administration of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006. AAV has many heritage staff (including archaeologists) engaged in a broad range of activities across the state, based in Melbourne, Wangaratta, Bairnsdale, Bendigo and Ballarat. AAV maintains a register of Aboriginal places in Victoria. This includes thousands of archaeological sites, along with many other places of cultural heritage significance to Aboriginal people. The register also includes copies of radiometric dates, photographic records, survey coverage and reports written about Aboriginal sites and places.
