Rio Tinto Indigenous Cadetship Program: Profile of Mr Kyle Turner

Mr Kyle Turner and the Study of Rock Art on the Burrup Peninsula

Mr Kyle Turner is a Wiradjuri person from central New South Wales who is currently studying Archaeology - Honours at the Australian National University in Canberra. Throughout his degree Kyle has worked throughout Australia, from far northern Queensland to central Western Australia. Kyle has received great support from family, friends and educationalists. In addition, a range of programs administered through Australian universities have assisted Kyle financially and imparted valuable experience relevant to his field.

Kyle’s honours thesis is investigating the Aboriginal rock engravings located on the Burrup Peninsula in northern Western Australia. This project was proposed by his supervisor during his three months work experience with Pilbara Iron’s Cultural Heritage Unit in the summer of 2005/06. This opportunity became available through the Rio Tinto Indigenous Cadetship Program, of which Kyle has been a member of since 2005. This program, and others alike, have assisted him financially throughout most of his degree and given him the chance to work all over Australia.

After his Honours year Kyle intends to either enrol in a PhD or take up a position with Rio Tinto.
