A University Phytolith Key 5: Spheroidal Class

This abstract represents the fifth in a series of communications which discuss a Universal Phytolith Key. The fifth poster introduces the Spheroidal class and follows on from an initial poster presented at the Second International Meeting on Phytolith Research which illustrated general surface morphologies applicable to any class (Bowdery et al. 1998, 2000), a second poster presenting the Point class (Hart et al. 2000), a third poster presenting the Prismatic/Ellipsoid/Trapezoid (PET) class (Lentfer et al. 2000) and a fourth poster presenting the Lobate class (Wallis et al. 2000). The Spheroidal class and characteristics are defined and illustrated with line drawings and scanning electron micrographs where available. Subjective terminology found in the literature, such as spherical, circular, globular etc is subsumed into the spheroidal group.
