The Australian Archaeological Association Inc. is calling for award nominations acknowledging outstanding contributions to Australian archaeology. Dr Alistair Paterson, President of The Australian Archaeological Association Inc. and Archaeology Lecturer at The University of Western Australia, said that the award highlights the value and importance of archaeology to understanding the history of our society. The ‘Rhys Jones Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Archaeology’ is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the field. Created to acknowledge the significant contribution of individual or co-authored publication to Australian archaeology is the ‘John Mulvaney Book Award’. The ‘Bruce Veitch Award for Excellence in Indigenous Engagement’ is awarded annually to any individual or group who has undertaken an archaeological or cultural heritage project which has produced a significant outcome for Indigenous interests. The ‘Life Membership for Outstanding Contribution to the Australian Archaeological Association Inc.’ award was established to recognise significant and sustained contributions to the objects and purposes of the Australian Archaeological Association Inc. Recipients will be announced at the Australian Archaeological Association Inc. Annual Conference in December 2006.
